Our Rehoming Process

The Hounds 4 Homes Inc Rehoming Process.

The Process

We work with greyhound owners and trainers to try and increase the number of dogs that are rehomed after retiring from racing. We hope to encourage prospective adopters and check that they understand the breed and what is required to ensure the dogs find safe and happy homes.

1/. Learn about Greyhounds

If you are interested in adopting an ex-racer, then the first step is for you to find out as much as possible about greyhounds (we lend out books and can provide web site links). Even though we think they are wonderful dogs, they are not for everyone. Please feel free to email or phone us with any queries you might have.

2/. Rehoming Application

We ask that you complete our Rehoming Application Form - downloadable from here - and then to mail it to:

The Secretary
Hounds 4 Homes Inc.
70 Bay Road
Oxford
North Canterbury

This tells us what sort of dog will best fit into your home, so we can make sure we get the best match possible.

3/. Home Visit

We visit your home and bring one of our pet greyhounds with us, so you can see how a greyhound can fit into your home. Then you need to greyhound-proof your house and get the essential items such as bedding and food bowls.

4/. Meeting Your Match

We work with local trainers to find a greyhound that will be a good match for you and your home. Sometimes there might be more than one, and we accompany you to visit the trainers and the dogs. You are able to trial the dog to see how it fits in with your family and we can be present when you bring the dog home for the first time if you wish.

5/. Follow up

After you have adopted your greyhound we will follow up with a phone call and, if desired, a home visit in the next few weeks. This is to offer support for both you and the dog, and to help with any issues which might arise.

Adoption / Rehoming Fee

We charge no fee, as our priority is to find good homes for as many dogs as possible. This means this we are currently not able to de-sex the greyhound before it is rehomed. However, we do have supportive vets who offer greatly reduced rates for any greyhound adopted through us: Shirley Veterinary Centre and Avonside Wainoni Veterinary Clinic.

We also provide a collar and leash, and will lend you a muzzle and greyhound crate for training if required.
